Seditious Things: Songs of Joseph Mather
On Tuesday night November 14th, 8.00 pm at Nether Edge Bowling Club I'll be singing some of the songs of Sheffield's own radical ballad-maker Joe Mather which I had the pleasure to set last year.
I'll be talking a bit about Mather's life in the early days of Sheffield's industrialisation, before and after the French Revolution, and singing some of his earthy songs that offer a few snapshots of the times as he saw them, including 'God Save Great Thomas Paine,' 'The Norfolk Street Riots' 'Sheffield Races' and a few more.
Copies of the recently reprinted book 'Seditious Things' by Steven Kay and Jack Windle will be available as will CDs of the songs.
I might even venture a word about Tom Paine in Rotherham and The corn Law Rhymer, Ebenezer Elliott
Entry will cost you a fiver. Hope to see some of you there x
PS If you're not sure but you'd like to know a bit more about 'Owd Mather' have a glag across at 'Joe Mather and Me' on 'posts' on this very site!
