That ‘Un and This ‘Un

(For Pete Seeger)

As I walked out in the streets of my own town
Shop windows boarded up, whole rows for sale
Like the scars of the wounds from the last little showdown
The union jacks flying into the gale

I was light-years away from the gusty bus-station
When I heard a young busker with plenty to say
She was raising the roof at the heart of the nation
For a whole generation that’s wasting away

‘You’ve betrayed the young men,’ she sang,’ betrayed the young women
You’ve feathered your own nest, you’ve thwarted the rest
You bought us and sold us and then even told us
That some little big city mester know best’

I was stopped in my tracks, such a joy just to listen
She sang with a passion and six strings of steel
After so many gone still there’s others like this un
The voice of the People’s refusal to kneel

‘You’ve betrayed the young men, you’ve betrayed the young women
You feathered your own nest, you puffed out your chest
You bought us and sold us and then even told us
Your big city mester investors know best’

And she raged against outsourcers, corporate financiers
The wealthy, the rich, prince and lady and lord
Every plundering hedge-funding, tax-dodging chancer
Designers of debts we can never afford

And the pet politicians and putrid musicians
Who suckle the system, the status and quo
Who deserve the derision, when their height of ambition
Is playing some royal variety show

‘You’ve betrayed the young men, you’ve betrayed the young women
You feathered your own nest, now you’re surfing the crest
You once rocked and rolled us, then bought, broke and sold us
Your banks and accountants will do for the rest…………….BUT

Some wired up young men and some fired up young women
Are coming together to change everything
Though the thick tide is brimmin’, and the sun and moon dimmin’
They’re swimmin’ like salmon upstream in the spring

Though the thick tide is against ‘em, they’re gorgeous and handsome
And though wide boys own even the songs they can sing
You can hear ‘em and scent ‘em, and see ‘em and sense ‘em
They’re dreaming this winter-world back into spring

And they’re coming together to change everything!
